“Hot Springs and the Novels Set There”

Hot Springs has played an important role in the history of Western North Carolina. For decades, it was a famous resort and destination for influential and wealthy patrons from across the southeast. The hot mineral springs for which the town was named supported two luxury hotels from the 19th and 20th centuries and inspired several novels, including Charles Frazier’s Thirteen Moons along with two novels by Terry RobertsIn this lecture, Roberts will share his research into the area, its resorts, and its history.

Cherokee, NC: From the Pages of History to the Contemporary Moment”

Join host Wiley Cash for a daytrip from Asheville to Cherokee. We’ll gather at Kituwah, the original town of the Cherokee; go behind the scenes with special exhibits at the Museum of the Cherokee People; and enjoy a Native meal for lunch. Transportation will be provided and seats are very limited. $250 includes transportation, programming, and lunch. The trip is rain or shine. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes and make sure to check the weather.

An Evening with Charles Frazier and Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle

Join us for a special event with author Charles Frazier, who will be in conversation with Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle, author of Even As We Breathe and an enrolled citizen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The two will discuss Fazier’s research while writing Thirteen Moons, as well as the significance of the book being the first novel translated into the Cherokee syllabary.
